Navigate the World of Indian Suppliers with Confidence: Insider Tips for Verification and Selection

Hey there, new buyer! I’m so excited to hear that you’re looking to source from India! I totally get that it can be overwhelming to navigate the sea of suppliers out there, especially if you’re new to the game and haven’t yet had the chance to visit India in person. But fear not! I’m here to tell you that there are some really simple and effective methods you can use to find the right supplier for you, and start sourcing from India with confidence.

First and foremost, I want to stress just how important it is to find the right supplier. Suppliers can make or break your business, so it’s absolutely crucial that you take the time to do your due diligence and find a supplier you can trust. But don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it might seem!

In this blog, I’m going to walk you through four checkpoints that you can use to verify Indian suppliers. These checkpoints will help you determine if a supplier is legitimate, export focused, has their own manufacturing unit, and is a quality supplier. And the best part? You can do all of this from the comfort of your own laptop!

Of course, there’s no substitute for visiting a supplier’s factory and meeting them in person but its great to know there are other ways  to vet suppliers and make sure you’re working with the right people.

I’m so excited to share these tips with you, and I know that once you’ve gone through them, you’ll feel much more confident about sourcing from India.

1. Is the supplier registered with Export Promotion Council?

Whether a supplier is legitimate is the first and most important step in sourcing products from India! And the best way to verify if a supplier is legitimate and export focused is by checking if it is registered with Export Promotion Council of India. This not only validates the authenticity of the supplier but also confirms that they have an IEC Code – Import Export Number, which is mandatory for engaging in Import Export trade. And if a supplier has a RCMC – Registration Cum Membership Certificate, issued by the export promotion council, it further validates that they are a registered exporter dealing in products authorized by the Indian Government.

Checking if a supplier is registered with EPC (Export Promotion Council) is actually quite easy. Just identify the relevant export promotion council based on the product category and look up their member directory to see if the exporter is listed. This simple check can save you a lot of trouble down the line and ensure that you are working with a legitimate and export-focused supplier.

2.Does the supplier participate in Trade shows?

Another way to ensure you’re dealing with a legitimate and reputable supplier, then checking if they participate in trade shows is definitely the way to go! And not just any trade shows, we’re talking about the biggest and most popular ones like the IHGF – Indian Handicrafts and Gifts fair and the IIGF- India International Garment Fair. Only registered exporters are eligible to participate in these fairs, so you can be sure that the suppliers you find there are not only legitimate but also export-focused!

By participating in trade shows, these suppliers are showing that they have the range of quality products and financial capacity to put themselves out there and stand out from the competition. And the best part is, you don’t even have to attend the trade show to find out if your supplier is exhibiting! You can simply visit the trade fair’s website and check the list of exhibitors to see if your exporter is on the list. It’s as easy as that!

3. Check RCMC (Registration Cum Membership Certificate)

To ensure that you are dealing with an actual manufacturer, you can try two simple methods.

Firstly, you can check the supplier’s RCMC ( Registration cum Membership Certificate), which will clearly state whether the company is registered as a manufacturer exporter or a merchant exporter or a manufacturer cum merchant exporter. You can even ask the supplier directly if they are an exporter and request their company profile and RCMC. This will help you to add them to your supplier’s list and qualify them for your business.

Another way to verify if the supplier is an actual manufacturer is by checking their product range. Every manufacturer specializes in a particular type of product or material. For instance, a supplier that specializes in Jute will have a vast range of Jute products. However, if the supplier offers a wide variety of products, including materials that are not related to their specialization, it may indicate that they are a middleman or a merchant exporter.

4. Does the supplier have Accreditations or Compliance certificates?

Now that you’ve established that your potential supplier is a legitimate export focussed manufacturer, it’s time to verify if he is a quality supplier that meets your standards.

One way to do this is by checking for additional accreditations and compliance certificates. Good established companies often hold certificates such as Star Export House, Sedex, SMETA, BSCI, ISO-9001, and more. These certificates are globally recognized and only awarded to suppliers that have compliant factory standards and good infrastructure.

To check if the supplier has these certificates, you can visit their website or simply ask them directly. Most well-established suppliers have these certificates displayed on their website along with their company profile, product categories, and infrastructure details. If a supplier doesn’t have a website, you can ask them to forward any compliance certificates they hold when contacting them for the first time. This will help you to consider including them in your qualified approved supplier list.

If the factory currently doesn’t hold any of these certificates, you always have the option to organize a third-party audit.

Now that you have all the necessary information to verify your potential Indian suppliers, it’s time to find the perfect one for your business!
